Miyama (Higashiichiki)
The Town of Satsuma pottery

Our Satsuma-yaki has over 400 years history。Miyama is the town of Satsuma-yaki pottery with 14 kilns. Jukan-toen Kiln and Sameshima Satarou Kiln is well known. At the Satsuma pottery Museum "Miyama Touyukan", you can try making satsuma-yaki pottery, and see every Miyama kiln's works. Every Autumn (the end of October), Miyama pottery festival is held in Miyama.




Satsuma-yaki pottery
Satsuma-yaki pottery is one of Kagoshima's special products.
In 1598, many Korean potters were brought back with the 17th lord of Satsuma, Yoshihiro Shimadzu, due to the defeat of the wars of bunrokku and Keicho. Shimadzu let Korean potters produce his wares. It is the origine of Satsuma-yaki pottery.
Satsuma-yaki has 2 types; White Satsuma (Shiro satsuma) and black Satsuma (kuro satsuma). White satsuma is ivory glazed ware usually with carvings or gorgeous paintings on it. Black satsuma is solid balck glazed ware which was widely used by the common people.
There are over 100 kilns in Kagoshima Prefecture. Kagoshima is one of the largest producers of ceramics in Japan.


 

 

 

 



 

 

Fukiagehama Beach
(Kaseda & Fukiage)

Fukiagehama is long sand dune which stretch from Kaseda city to Fukiage town. Fukiagehama has beautiful long beach and gorgeous pine forests around. Fukiagehama is one of the 3 biggest sand dunes in japan. The beach is also known as the egg-laying place of sea turtles.

Kaseda City Peace Museum
(Kaseda City)

There was one of the Kamikaze base in Kaseda City during the last war as same as Chiran town. Zero-sen Japanese fighting plane and articles left behind young pilots such as photos and letters are displayed in the peace museum.

Getting to HIGASHIICHIKI
Car: About 40 min from Kagoshima City
JR: Take JR Kagoshima honsen line to Higashi-ichiki station, and 10 min drive to Miyama.
BUS
: Take Hayashida bus bound for "Ijuin", and get off at "Miyama".
   

Chiran
 

Chiran is referred to as the "Little Kyoto" for the numerous samurai residences in the region. About 10 samurai houses with traditional gardens have been preserved and are visited regulary by many tourists. A visit to one of these cultural treasures will allow you to experience traditional Japan. The structure and artifacts of these domiciles hold many stories.

Chiran Samurai Houses

Samurai houses and gardens which were built about 250 years ago. 7 gardens with arranged by stones and beautiful shaped trees are famous. Gates of houses, stone walls and hedges remain atmosphere of village in Edo period. Those houses and fine gardens are properly preserved. Threre are similar Samurai houses in Izumi City and Kamou town in Kagoshima.

Chiran Peace Museum

It is the peach museum for Kamikaze Pilots. Over 50 years ago, it was still in the middle of war, Army special attack base was placed in Chiran. From this land, many young Kamikaze pilots flied and died. The museum was established to convey the brave young pilots and for the World peach. Feelings and records like photos, letters of them are displayed.

The museum has a large collection related to history and culture of Southern Satsuma and Chiran.

Tomiya Shokudo Museum

Tomiya Shokudo was restaurant where Tome Torihama used to run. Tome was admired like mother by young pilots. The tomiya shokudo was restored as memorial museum introducing the life of Tome and young pilots.

Getting to CHIRAN
Car : About 1 hour from Kagoshima City
BUS
: Take Kagoshima Kotsu Bus from Yamakataya Department store in Kagoshima City to Chiran. (Fare: about 860 yen)
J R
: Take JR Ibusuki Makurazaki line from Nishikagoshima station to Hirakawa station, and get Kagoshima Kotsu Bus from the station to Chiran. (Total fare: about 850yen)

Natural Sand Steam Bath

The sand steam baths of Ibusuki and Yamagawa are unique in all the world and nationality famous in Japan. The bath is on the beach. You have to wear a Japanese yukata (cotton kimono), and lay on the beach while being buried under the naturally heated black sand. Enjoy the "sand sauna".

Lake Ikeda

It is the biggest volcanic lake in Kyshu with a circumference of 15 km and depth of 233m. Giant eel, 2m long and weighing up to 5 kg live in the lake. A monster named "Isshii" is believed to inhabit the lake.

Jiyukan COCCO Hashimure
(Ibusuki City)

Archeological museum. In the museum, you can see life style and food of ancient people, connection between human and nature. Not only earthenwares which were found from Hashimure, but also food, houses are displayed.

Flower Park Kagoshima
(Yamagawa Town)

Huge Flower Park which is surrounded by ocean and mountains. Over 2000 kinds of flowers and plants from all over the world and Kagoshima's subtropical plants are cultivated and arranged in different themes.

Nagasakibana Cape
(Yamagawa Town)

Nagasakibana is the most Southern cape in Satsuma paninsula. From the cape, there are great view of Mt. Kaimon, Sata cape of other side of peninsula, and Iou island in nice dayl.

Kaimon is called "Mt. Satsuma Fuji (Satsuma is formar name of Kagoshima)", because of its resemblance to Mmt. Fuji. 922m above sea levvel. At the foot of Mt. Kaimon, there is a natural park with facilities for camping, grass skiing and mini golf.

Tousenkyo
(Kaimon Town)

Tousenkyo is Some noodle restaurant. Somen noodles (Somen nagashi) in Kaimon town is very popular to local people and also tourists. Somen noodles are thin noodle which are eaten cold after being dippedn in cold broth. Kagohima's Somen nagashi is very unique that you have to take somen from rotating fresh water. The restaurant open throughout the year.

Kagoshima is surrounded by beautiful sea. Makurazaki is the port town where is famous for bonito fishining. On the Southwest tip of the Satsuma Peninsula, beautiful rias coastline stretch from Noma town to Bounotsu. The area has beautiful scenery of ocean and mountains. Bounotsu Town is small port town where used be a center of international trade and religious exchange in ancient time. During the Summer time, the beach around bounotsu and kasasa become busy. There are many beautiful spots for diving. Whale watching in Kasasa is also popular.

Car: About 1 hour 10 min from Kagoshima City
J R: Take JR Ibusuki Makurazaki line from Nishikagoshima station to Makurazaki station.

Getting to BOUNOTSU

Car : About 1 hour 30 min. from Kagoshima City


Getting to KASASA

BUS: Take bus bound for "Kaseda" from Nishi kagoshima station, and change a bus bound for "Nomaike" at Kaseda Bus center. Get off at Kasasa.
Car: About 2 hours from Kagoshima City.
